Selling mainly on Amazon or into major retailers? They check that a code is registered to your brand in the GS1 database. Buy a company prefix from GS1, or apply for an Amazon GTIN exemption. Our guide on where to buy UPC codes for Shopify walks through the trade-offs.
Frequently asked questions
What does Dragon Buy GTIN, UPC Barcodes do?
It is a Shopify app that lets you buy unique GTIN, UPC and EAN barcode numbers inside your Shopify admin and auto-assign them to your products and variants. The codes are GS1-originated, come with a certificate of authenticity, and can be exported at any time.
How much do the barcodes cost?
The app is free to install and includes 10 barcodes for free. After that: 25 barcodes for $19, 100 for $39, 1,000 for $149 and 10,000 for $899. These are one-time purchases, and the codes never expire.
Are these real GS1 barcodes?
Yes. Every code is GS1-originated and unique to you. They are not registered to your brand name in the GS1 database, though, which matters for a few strict channels (see the Amazon question below).
Will these UPC codes work on Amazon?
Not always. Amazon checks UPCs against the GS1 database and expects the code to be registered to the brand on the listing. Codes that are not brand-registered can be rejected. If Amazon is your main channel, either buy a company prefix directly from GS1 or apply for an Amazon GTIN exemption.
Will they work for Google Shopping?
They are valid, unique GTINs that go into Shopify’s barcode field, which is what your product feed sends to Google Merchant Center. That helps clear “missing GTIN” issues for products that need one.
What is the difference between UPC, EAN and GTIN?
GTIN is the umbrella term for the global product number. A UPC is the 12-digit version used mainly in North America, and an EAN is the 13-digit version used in most other countries. The app sells both.
Do the barcodes expire or have annual fees?
No. There are no renewal fees. Once you buy a code it is yours to reuse across Shopify, marketplaces and retail.
